Sarcoidosis Pharmacogenetics Research

- Ongoing research regarding pharmacogenetics of commonly used medications for patients with biopsy proven sarcoidosis.
- We have a database of at least 100 patients with PCR testing for genotype-drug interactions
AMSAR BIO:
July 2015- July 2016
- The AMSAR-Bio (American Multicentric Sarcoidosis Research Collaboration on Biomarker) network was established in 2015 to facilitate multidisciplinary collaborative research in sarcoidosis and increase patient awareness of this disease at a national level.
- We participated in a research project and filmed a YouTube video to help physicians diagnose and further treat this chronic inflammatory disease.
- This work was commissioned by Dr. Mehdi Mirsaeidi of the University of Miami, Dr. Robert Baughman of the University of Cinicinnati, Ruxana Sadikot of Emory University, Dr. Mehdi Khosravi of the University of Kentucky, Dr. Alicia Gerke of the University of Iowa, Dr. Nadera Sweiss of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Sarcoidosis Quality Improvement Project:
July 2015- June 2016
- Along with my research mentor Dr. Mehdi Mirsaeidi we established a clinic at the Miami VA for patients who had Sarcoidosis. We personally called 200 patients with sarcoidosis to be seen in clinic. Thus far 35 patients had been seen and they were given a survey as to their experience in clinic most reported positive results.
- This project was accepted for an oral presentation at the Florida ACP Chapter Annual Residents and Medical Students meeting.
Radionuclide Stress Testing for Preoperative Assessment in Vet Population:
November 2013- June 2016
- Personally Involved in data collection and statistical analysis of over 1,500 patients underwent stress tests at a large VA Medical Center in Miami, Florida. This paper is completed and pending acceptance.
- Along with four other Internal Medicine Residents and under the tutelage of Dr. Simon Chakko we are determining whether appropriate use criteria for pre-operative stress tests is being correctly implemented.
- We are also looking at whether peri-operative complications and mortality within and 1 year period is different based on the pre-operative risk determine if pre-op stress tests do actually decrease or more likely help to predict cardiovascular related adverse events.
- The data collection phase of this project has ended and we are now preparing the statistical data for possible publication in the spring of 2016.
Researcher-Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Department of Internal Medicine June 2014 -June 2016
- Along with two other residents and one fellow and under the tutelage of Dr. Andrew Quartin, Dr. Roland Schein, Dr. Cynthia Cely, and Dr. Daniel Kett we are looking into the newly designated Berlin Criteria for ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). One of the components of the criteria requires that a patient be intubated with a PEEP (positive end-expiratory pressure) of > 5 cm H2O for moderate or severe ARDS.
- We are evaluating whether it is necessary for a patient to be intubated in order to meet the criteria to have ARDS or whether NIV (Non-Invasive Ventilation) could be used. This is pending publication for the Summer of 2016.

- Compiled information, developed questionnaires and spreadsheets under the tutelage of Dr. Christopher Ward for research focused on the presumed decreased association between professional musicians and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
- Contacted hundreds of professional musicians to participate in questionnaires pertaining to their fitness, general health, instrument of choice, and finally incidence of sleep apnea.

- A research paper by Christopher P. Ward and his coauthors, Kaki M. York, Kaylee K. Vance, Andrew S. Calzadilla, Frank J. Walch, Jennifer J. Song, and Masha Sharf, surveyed 901 musicians, 847 of whom were college musical instrument instructors across the United States, with the remaining 54 being members of orchestras in the Houston, TX, area. We found that musicians who play double-reed woodwind instruments–oboes, bassoons and English horns–appear to have a significantly lower risk of obstructive sleep apnea than musicians who play other instruments, including other wind instruments
